Excellent post Tenniser @ 131 and I agree. Fast court = choose doubles specialist. However it would be a brave call for the captain as there would have been a fair amount of criticism of her if she had made it and still lost!
People always say 'British players (like Watson) lack bottle' but this is unfair as they tend to watch the top players and British players only. Top players by definition tend to close out matches so lower ranked British players do not compare well on the big points or in grinding out results. Watson may well be no worse in tight situations than any player of her ranking and better than some.
Konta did well to win her singles against Osaka but she isn’t a doubles player and her volleys are terrible. Watson has some pedigree as a doubles player and has better volleys. From 3/3 in the third set Konta missed nearly every shot she hit including easy volleys to cause Watson to lose serve. It’s a failure of the captain I’m afraid to not put in a dbls specialist especially on a fast court
More money for women's sport through excellent coaching is a good idea. Wrong sport though.
1600 new coaches. Where are they going to coach? There are virtually no courts with public access left and they wouldn't be coaching on those anyway - or inclusive to everyone at schools. No, they will enconsed at private clubs charging a fortune for running appalling coaching groups to middle class kids. If the LTA want to invest, they should build more courts with open access.
Grunters should not even be allowed oncourt Maria.........you just don't get it or put another way,you don't want to get it.Well done GARCIA.
So yet another bunch of 'privileged', spoilt millionaires let our country down AGAIN!!!What's new?
haha.Eddie Izards beret.U do realise the fed cup is an only womens event.Obviously you have no clue about tennis at all
Can only assume that a number of people on here have no idea about the funding of tennis.@121 it won't be to the detriment of other sports as the revenue from Wimbledon pays for the LTA. In effect the Championships finances the sport in this country.@102 Why do assume the LTA is funding Heather Watson? She's a top 100 player and easily earning enough money to fund herself
@ 123, have to agree with your point, but in this day and age, surely Murray could self identify as female!
@119. It may have escaped your notice but Murray is male and is unlikely to be allowed to play in a female only tournament
@118 what planet are you on!! "Athletes" - don't make me laugh! Jess Ennis was an athlete, KJT is an athlete etc etc. These spoiled tennis brats are light years away from being athletes. Tennis will always be a joke in the UK until the LTA get inner city kids involved (kids with heart) - and that will never happen as the LTA is governed by fools.
Never mind - as reported today - another 1600 female coaches should solve it. So let me get this right - huge investment - probably at huge cost to other more successful sports - to maybe develop a few talented ladies who may make millions in an already hugely overrewarded sport and who will ultimately go live in Monaco? Or who may turn up occasionally so we can compete in the Fed Cup?
