For #31 (toast) "when did a "? Well, there are lists of all Grand Slam event winners, use Google/wikipedia (you've already heard about Australians). Oh, that's a feeble jibe about Konta? Ted Dexter was Italian, Terry Butcher in Singapore (loads more). Do get a life. For #42 (Micron) & "Pliskobot" - I guess you're unaware of Borg, totally composed, barely moved an eyebrow. Not a bad player?!
47 most people would give Osaka a chance of course they would; she is world number one and has won the last two slams and toughed out two very difficult opening matches it is just that Simona is the favourite, she was before the tournament started and for many still is now; Defending Champion and best WTA player on clay in recent years also her head to head against Osaka is very good!
@39,Somehow, no one seems to be giving Osaka a faint chance to win this tournament. Wonder why that's so. Her game against Azarenka should count as the most quality and challenging so far. And she seems to be finding her footing on the clay, though with slow starts. Guess, she's loving the non-attention so far, despite being the #1 seed. She thrives that way.
Can Simona defend her title? I hope so.
@14 @7 I agree with what you say about the reasons for the lack of serve and volley, especially on clay. I have to say, though, that since it happens on grass as well, I still hold the Nick Bollettieri Academy partially responsible!! But thank you both very much for reminding me about Ashleigh Barty. I do enjoy watching her, and I'd very much like her to reach the final - and if possible, win!
32. In reply to your question..’when last did an Australian win a Grand Slam Event?...’ Australian Lleyton Hewitt won USO 2001 (bt Sampras); and Wimbledon 2002 (bt Nalbandian. Australian Sam Stosur won USO 2011 (bt Serena Williams). - and this is only in the Singles Events. Aussies have also won in the doubles and mixed doubles events
39 And Federer he has won 3 of the last 9 slams that is a 1/3 and the most recent was only last year
Pliskobot v2.0 software malfunction. Software update required.....Failure. Huawei Pliskobot software unable to update, terminating session. 🚫
garbine is fit
Svitolina actually won the 2018 WTA Finals, she wasn't runner up!
@37 - agree. Ladies singles tennis much more interesting than men's. Very unpredictable. In men's game its Djokovic or Nadal for slams.Real opportunity for someone unexpected in bottom half of draw to seize their chance to get to final. Still think Halep will be champion this year though.Good for the sport if Muguruza re-discovers form & confidence
@20 "Lots of top seeds getting knocked out. Will Matric go all the way to the final?"Both the Gentlemen and Ladies top seeds are still in it! ;-)
Women tennis never stagnates. The revolving door victories and upsets are one of the reasons it keeps fans interests. Expecting more upsets before the semi-finals.
@33 - Don't worry, I'm sure he'll be back on the next HYS complaining about "bias" and "censorship", when in reality he just broke the rules of the website he willingly signed up to and regularly visits.
Crikey, a HYS about women's sport and none of the top comments are moaning about political correctness or BBC journalism. What's going on?!
Bizarre how French Open has Grand Slam status when you look at the courts and how empty they are. Wimbledon and ATP final the only worthwhile tournaments, if you ask me!
31 TonyHDon't rise to the bait of 28. His posts are regularly deleted for his racist, biased, inaccurate and dull comments.
When did an Australian last win a tennis grand slam event ?Has a Hungarian ever won ? Just covering the bases
For #28 (Tennis Legend ?!!) - "I fear Konta" - well, she has as much chance of winning this Slam as we do, look at the draw. As for "Murray / undeserved" - oh dear, 'legend' you say? Where's the evidence?! No Slam win is 'undeserved', he's beaten Novak in 2 of the 3 GS wins, beaten Federer & Del Potro for the Olympic Golds, & even managed to beat Nadal in a Clay final, in Madrid.
