Guernsey's Richard Stapely produced a strong performance to finish first in the 45-49 years age category at the Beaver Triathlon in Lincolnshire.
The Sarnian finished 23rd overall from a field of more than 350 competitors.
He told BBC Guernsey: "The gamble to race without socks and save time in transition paid off, even though I had some very nasty blisters at the end.
"My winning margin was only 45 seconds, close to the time it takes to put the socks on wet feet."
Stapely completed the 1.2 mile swim in 36:42 minutes, taking two hours 16.18 minutes over the 47 mile bike distance, and then running the half marathon in one hour 31:51 minutes.
