Welsh distance runner Dewi Griffiths secured the Commonwealth Games 'A' standard at the Lisbon 10,000m in Portugal last weekend.

The Swansea Harrier finished fifth in a time of 28min 48.59sec, well inside the 29.00.00 required to be nominated for selection for the 2014 Glasgow Games.

In the process Griffiths smashed his previous best of 30.19.37.

That was the fastest time over 10,000m registered by a British athlete so far in 2014.

Griffiths becomes the ninth Welsh athlete to secure an 'A' standard, joining Dai Greene (400mh), Rhys Williams (400mh), Brett Morse (discus), Sally Peake (pole vault), Paul Walker (pole vault), Carys Parry (hammer), Gareth Warburton (800m) and Elinor Kirk (5,000m).
