The local volunteer heroes of Welsh sport are to be honoured as nominations open for the Wales Sport Awards, an event jointly hosted by BBC Wales and Sport Wales.

After an unforgettable year for sport in Wales it is now time for the coaches and volunteers who do not hit the headlines to be recognised.

Nominations for the six grassroots awards are now open at the Wales Sports Awards website.

Nominations close on 30 September.

The Wales Sport Awards represent the country's biggest annual celebration of the best of elite and grassroots sport.

The ceremony will take place on Monday, 5 December in Hoddinott Hall at Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay and will include the presentation of the prestigious BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year.

The categories open for nominations are to find the young coach, community coach, volunteer and young volunteer and coach to disabled people of 2016.

There is also once more a community lifetime achievement category.

Rhodri Talfan Davies, Director of BBC Wales, said: "The nation has revelled in an unforgettable year of Welsh sporting success, and it's absolutely right that our brilliant volunteers will share the same stage with our biggest stars at the Wales Sport Awards."
