Anyone care apart from the people subsidising this waste of time. BBC have sent almost double the amount of "competitors" - sooner pay per view comes in the better. Licence fee is a joke.
The biggest sporting events have become too costly for anyone other than authoritarian petro-countries. Ever more demanding standards for size of event, stadia quality, safety/security, customer comforts are responsible. FIFA and the IOC are last ones to get the memo that post-bubble we cannot afford their fantasies. The Brazilians sounded the alarm first. Change is inevitable…...
@66: That idea robs locals/athletes of being able to see/compete in the Games on their own turf though. Home advantage wins medals. Plus Athens would have to upgrade and maintain their hotels, airports, public transport, etc - despite the fact that such capacity would be redundant for 3 years out of every 4.
That should be this week rather than daily politics
The daily politics has just shown one of its very best pieces with regards to speaking out at the olympics and I would reccomend everyone watches it.Use the opportunities given to you to speak out rather than using those opportunities to aid your self / sponsors.
Pick 1 world class site for both summer and winter and stay there at least for 20 years. Athens is the home of the Olympics, they should have it for eternity. All countries poney up some $$ and we maintain 1 facility and none of this "my Olympics are better than yours BS" - waste of money and nobody can afford it anymore
Is anybody else having difficulty accessing anything but the current page? I'm interested in reading ther earlier comments, but cannot access them. The rating system isn't working either, though that is a relatively minor problem. Is it just me???
@63DrDI agree the Olympics are becoming too big. What's the point of Football when there is a Fifa World Cup and Euros. It gets bigger because they want more sponsorship they want more money. The cost will put off many cities. That is why we see the IOC and Fifa not afraid to go to countries with poor human rights and high levels of corruption.
There are simply too many sports it is way too big now. For example Olympic golf and other 'professional' sports that don't really need the Olympics - like Tennis, Basketball and Football. They should stick to track and field and a few other traditional sports, and get rid of all of the ones that are 'judged' rather than 'won' while they're at it, even if that means gymnastics has to go.
Though not as bad as Fifa shindigs in regards to organisation and wrongdoings. The Olympics are ego massaging for politicians. Many French/Switz/U.S resorts could stage the Winter Olympics for a reasonable cost. They have the infrastructure but the Olympics like the World Cup likes to go to new places. That's the problem really any less developed resort will have to invest billions.
FYI Oslo and Stockholm are two very different places. The article references Stockholm withdrawing their bid and the caption under the photo references Oslo. Typical internet news sloppy work.
