Isle of Man snowboarder Zoe Gillings says she is 'fit and confident' ahead of the new snowboard cross season.

The British number one will travel to Austria on Wednesday after being invited by former coach Frank Germann to train with the Dutch national squad.

"I'm feeling fit and confident and I'm very excited to train with some excellent people," she said.

Gillings' first competition will be December's opening round of the World Cup series in Telluride, Colorado.

The 26-year-old finished last season with a series of fine results, including a World Cup podium in Switzerland and a seventh place at the World Championships in Spain.

The Manx athlete has had a turbulent two years, due primarily to funding cutbacks, but also with a knee injury she suffered at the Olympic Games in Vancouver.

"I've got seven or eight competitions between December and March and I will be targeting podiums in everyone," she said. "I'm really looking forward to getting to Austria.

"I will be training with Bell Berghuis and a couple of guys as well so I am going to learn a lot."

Gillings' last season was heavily disrupted by funding cuts, but rather than throwing in the towel, she set up her own business to fund her training.

"I launched my business in May and it makes a huge difference towards funding my training programme and enabling me to go out and compete. I'm not relying on anyone anymore, I'm doing it all for myself," she added.
