Love Hurts' - Charlotte's story
A drama-documentary based on the personal story of Charlotte. Charlotte started a relationship with an older man who swept her off her feet. Even though her friends and family were unsure, she quickly moved in with him and found herself more and more isolated. His behaviour became very controlling and on occasions violent. Things changed for Charlotte when her friend Max told her to move in with her. The film is based on an actual interview but for the safety of the interviewee names have been changed and the words are spoken by actors.
There are points in this clip that would be ideal for exploratory dramas that could be acted out by the class. For example, students could explore how Charlotte's boyfriend could have explained his behaviour after the first incident to reassure her. They could also look at how, as Charlotte says, "it all came out" with Max. These dramas could be rehearsed and acted out in the class. Pupils could also consider what help may have been available to Charlotte if Max had not intervened, by researching this on the internet. Charlotte also talks about how much she missed her boyfriend and how much it hurt. This could be a good point to set up an empathetic investigation into why those who are abused stay in abusive relationships.
