Emmet's Student Diary 伦敦学生博客第六周

Emmet Conlon O'Reilly

Wednesday 4th November 2009 – Football

Hi,

As promised this week's diary entry is all about football. Arsenal played Liverpool in the fourth round 一轮 of the Carling Cup last Wednesday night so with three friends I made the journey to Arsenal's Emirates stadium 体育场 in North London for the occasion.

Click through the pages of the photo gallery to find out all about the match.

I'd love to hear from any football fans in China. Who do you support? How popular is football in China at the moment?

Best wishes,

Emmet

In his photo gallery Emmet said that Arsenal football club takes its role very seriously. To take your role seriously means that you believe the role you have is very important and needs your full attention. For example, “I take my role as goal keeper seriously: I always keep my eye on the ball.” Emmet said he couldn’t show his true colours at the match because he supports a different team. If you show your true colours it means that you show your real character. E.g. “Everyone thought John was a coward but he showed his true colours when he jumped into a river to save a woman from drowning.” Finally, he said that the match was bound to inspire mixed emotions. If something is bound to do something it means it’s likely to happen. The phrase bound to inspire means something is likely to inspire you in a particular way. E.g. “Seeing my friend win the race was bound to inspire me to try harder next time” or: “Starting a new course was bound to make me feel nervous.”
