Editor, BBC Ukrainian
The successful candidate will have the overall management and editorial responsibility for the BBC Ukrainian department within the BBC World Service’s European Hub. Based in Kyiv, he or she will be in charge of the BBC MIJ SVIT BBC.UA ( Бі-Бі-Сі Мій світ - bbc.ua) multimedia website, for the content provision to BBC partners as well as for collaboration within the Hub and the wider BBC.
BBC Ukrainian is undergoing a platform change from radio and online to online only with the entire operation being run from the recently acquired Kyiv office. The process will involve shaping and putting into action a strategy to best meet the Ukrainian audience and partners’ needs, while providing value to the rest of the BBC. This strategy will be expected to take into account the rise of social media and the importance of distribution via partners, without compromising on BBC Values.
The BBC MIJ SVIT BBC.UA website has been launched in 2010 as a fully multimedia online offer, to complement the BBC’s radio offer in Ukrainian. Following the closure of radio broadcasts, you will be expected to lead the team in Kyiv and London in building a stand-alone online offer, providing Ukrainian audience with a view of top Ukrainian affairs in a comprehensive global context. You'll support continuing initiatives to develop innovative ways of using multimedia to compete in Ukrainian internet market, to make BBC UA coverage of international affairs the leading online offer in Ukrainian language.
The base location in Kyiv will also present a challenge in developing internationally focused contents that maintains the tone expected from a BBC outlet, as will the inevitable influence of the local media style on the Kyiv based journalists.
You will need to have a track record of success in an editorial role in either the BBC, or another online publication, magazine, print, television or radio journalism. An extensive experience of the Internet and awareness of its potential as a medium for the delivery of news and information, and a willingness to develop a sound knowledge of how emerging technology can effectively be harnessed. You must have a degree level education or equivalent and be a great communicator, and a fluent Ukrainian and English speaker.
You must have extensive up-to-date knowledge of the target area and its media market together with appropriate negotiating and revenue-earning skills. Thorough knowledge of British and international current affairs is required as is a proven track record as a Manager/Team Leader together with a considerable experience of managing budgets and the commitment to achieving the most efficient and cost effective use of resources.
